Land of the Midnight Sun - a great experience

We sailed on the Marco Polo a few years ago and, having read some negative reviews since its acquisition by Transocean, we were expecting the worst, especially as we have sailed on the wonderful QE2 since. However, our fears were unfounded.

Embarkation at Tilbury was fast and efficient. The ship has retained the character of a smaller traditional vessel and appeared clean and tidy throughout, though we couldn't see what changes had been made during the recent refit. Our cabin was extremely comfortable, well-equipped and had plenty of storage space.

Our major worry had been the reports about surly crew, but apart from one or two individuals who didn't appear to know how to smile, they were all delightful. Service and food in the Waldorf restaurant was excellent, less so in Marco's bistro, which was overcrowded at mealtimes. Some extra staff are needed here, especially if they could persuade passengers to vacate their table when they've finished eating rather than hogging it all day. More casual seating areas throughout the ship would help with this. Service in the bars was also slow sometimes.

Entertainment was plentiful and varied and the Russian show troupe in particular put on some fantastic shows - even non-musical-lovers like us were impressed. And whatever the The Cruise Director, Richard Sykes, is on should be bottled and prescribed on the NHS.

There was a good choice of excursions - these were quite pricey but only to be expected in Norway. The excursion to the North Cape itself was a highlight, but the crowds inside the North Cape Hall were horrendous - visiting on Midsummer's Night was perhaps not the best idea. The scenery throughought the trip was fantastic and we had the added bonuses of excellent weather and experiencing midnight sun on several occasions.

Overall, a fantastic trip. The Marco Polo is still good value.
